The Breath of Release — A Simple Practice for a Cluttered Mind

When was the last time you actually exhaled?

Not just breathed — but truly released? There’s a difference, beautiful soul. Breathing keeps us alive. Releasing sets us free.

This month at TWC, our theme is Clearing Mental Clutter, and I want to share one of the simplest, most accessible practices for doing just that — the Breath of Release. You don’t need a yoga mat, a meditation app, or a quiet room (though quiet rooms are lovely). You just need a moment and a willingness to let something go.

Why Breath Works

When our minds are cluttered, our bodies feel it first. Tight shoulders. A chest that feels slightly compressed. A jaw that won’t quite unclench. The body holds what the mind hasn’t yet processed. Intentional breathing interrupts that cycle — it signals to your nervous system that you are safe, that you can let go, that stillness is available to you right now.

Try This: The Breath of Release

Find a comfortable seat. Close your eyes if that feels safe.

  • Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of four — breathing in clarity, peace, and presence.
  • Hold gently for a count of two.
  • Breathe out slowly through your mouth for a count of six — and as you exhale, release something. A worry. A conversation. A weight you’ve been carrying.
  • Repeat three to five times.

That’s it. Simple, accessible, and powerful.

A Question to Sit With

After your breath practice, try journaling or simply reflecting on this:

“What is the one thing I’m holding on to today that is preventing me from experiencing stillness?”

You don’t have to answer perfectly. Just be honest with yourself. That honesty is the beginning of your glow-up from the inside out.

A Quiet Center

Practical wellness is mindful decluttering. It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive or require a week-long retreat. Sometimes the most profound act of self-care is pausing long enough to breathe — and choosing, with intention, to release.

If you’re finding that the mental clutter feels heavier than a breath practice can address, that’s what therapy is for, boo. We’ve got you.
